Advanced recycling can open recycling routes for mixed and difficult plastic waste streams that are not suitable for mechanical recycling. In pyrolysis-based processes, however, converting waste plastics into oil is only one step in the recycling value chain. The quality of the resulting pyrolysis oil determines whether it can be processed further into feedstocks for new plastics and chemicals.

Plastic-derived pyrolysis oils are highly variable. Their composition depends on the waste input and process condition. In addition, they can contain sulphur, nitrogen, oxygenates, halogens, metals and other contaminants. They also cover a broad boiling range. Without further treatment, these characteristics can restrict their use in steam crackers, refineries and other downstream processes.

Post-processing and upgrading therefore form a critical bridge between plastic waste conversion and the production of new chemicals and plastics. Depending on the feedstock and target application, pyrolysis oil can be fractionated, distilled, hydroprocessed, purified or catalytically converted. These steps can remove contaminants, adjust product quality and direct different fractions towards the most suitable downstream use.

The right upgrading strategy is not the same for every oil. While some streams need extensive purification before they can enter conventional petrochemical infrastructure, others can be processed through catalytic routes that tolerate higher levels of impurities and reduce the need for upstream treatment. This choice has a direct impact on feedstock flexibility, product yields, process complexity and the overall efficiency of the recycling route.

Detailed analytics are equally important. Understanding the contaminant profile and molecular composition of pyrolysis oil helps predict cracking behaviour, define treatment requirements and avoid problems further downstream. Pilot testing and process design then determine how upgraded oils can be integrated into existing steam cracking and separation systems.

Pyrolysis Oil Post-Processing & Upgrading – Advanced Recycling Conference 2026

The session on Pyrolysis Oil Post-processing & Upgrading at the Advanced Recycling Conference 2026 will examine how variable waste-derived oils can be transformed into reliable feedstocks for chemical production. It will bring together approaches ranging from analysis and fractionation to hydroprocessing, purification, catalytic conversion and cracker integration – and also show where each route can add the most value.
