The Advanced Recycling Conference 2026 explores technologies, markets, financing and scale-up of innovative recycling solutions for waste streams including mixed plastic waste, textiles and PVC.

Alongside advanced recycling solutions for plastics and other complex material streams, this year’s programme in collaboration with VinylPlus places a dedicated focus on one of the most technically demanding areas of plastics circularity: PVC recycling.

PVC is difficult to recycle for good reasons. Complex formulations, legacy additives, fillers, composite structures and heterogeneous post-consumer waste streams can limit conventional recycling. The challenge is often not only recovering the polymer, but also separating PVC from other materials and managing substances that can restrict recyclate quality and future use.

At the same time, PVC shows that difficult waste streams can become highly circular when the right systems are in place. Mechanical recycling remains the backbone of PVC recycling and can deliver high-quality results for clean, well-defined streams. In 2024, around 725,000 tonnes – 35 % of European PVC waste streams – were recycled.

The key is therefore not one universal technology, but choosing the right pathway for each waste stream. Closed-loop mechanical recycling can deliver virgin-quality material for products such as PVC window profiles, while pharmaceutical blister packs require dedicated collection and reliable emptying. More complex materials can benefit from dissolution recycling, which can separate PVC from other polymers, fillers, aluminium and legacy additives without attacking the polymer chain.

Advanced recycling can also recover not only PVC, but additives, minerals and other valuable components from challenging post-consumer waste, improving resource efficiency, regulatory compliance and material value.

On 17–18 November 2026, the Advanced Recycling Conference in Cologne will bring together experts from industry, research, technology development and policy. The dedicated PVC session, organised in collaboration with VinylPlus, will cover collection, closed-loop mechanical recycling, dissolution and advanced treatment – showing where PVC circularity already works and where further development is still needed.
